smarty
I always had a hard time installing smarty template engine for PHP on xampp or wamp. As there are loads of articles on linux smarty installation. But I was finding it hard to find one for Windows.  Here is the detail procedure. The following article is partly adopted from http://news.php.net/php.smarty.dev/2703

1. Download smarty template engine pachake from here

2. Create a folder smarty outside www or htdocs folder and extract the content of Smarty.x.x.x tothe same  smarty folder.

for example C:\xampp\smarty

3. Now edit ypour php.ini file and edit the include library path add the location path of smarty libraries.

for example: include_path = “.;C:\xampp\smarty\libs”

4. Now we have set the library paths. Next is to set the template and cache folders.

Now create a additional smarty folder inside your www or htdocs  ( This is in different from the smarty package folder outside )  and  create two folders templates and configs inside of it.

example: C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\templates and    C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\configs

5. In the outside smarty folder containing the whole package create two folders templates_c and cache .

so that it reads as C:\xampp\smarty\templates_c and C:\xampp\smarty\cache.

6. Now your smarty installtion is done. to test create two scripts index.php and index.tlp . Place index.php in your root folder  and index.tpl inside of C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\templates and copy the following code in to it.

(Please take care of the single quotes in the code below while copying it for your use)
index.php

<?php

// load Smarty library
require(‘Smarty.class.php’);

$smarty = new Smarty;

$smarty->template_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’;
$smarty->config_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/config’;
$smarty->cache_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/cache’;
$smarty->compile_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/templates_c’;

$smarty->assign(‘name’,’memohnish!’);
$smarty->display(‘index.tpl’);

?>

index.tpl<html>
<body>
Hello, {$name}!
</body>
</html>

and run the index.php in your browser and you should see the desired output

    Hi,
    I have gone through all the instructions that u have given here. But I am not been able to install the smarty application. My php is giving error bellow:
    Warning: require(Smarty.class.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in D:\xampp\htdocs\test.php on line 4

    Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘Smarty.class.php’ (include_path=’.;D:\xampp\php\pear\’) in D:\xampp\htdocs\test.php on line 4
    How can solve this

    • it seems you did not try setting the include path of smarty libraries
      in php.ini Which in your case should be

      include_path = “.;D:\xampp\smarty\libs” or your class files and directory paths are not set correctly.

      did you try step 3 mentioned above?

      If problem still persist please provide me with all of your configurations and code

      Any ways Thanks for reading through my blog.

    Hi memohnish,
    Thaks for your replay. I have installed Xampp in a directory like ‘D:\’
    I have created a folder naming ‘smarty’ in ‘d:\xampp\’. and inserted the smarty content in the folder. and then created a folder naming ‘smarty’ in ‘d:\xampp\htdocs\’. There I created two folders naming ‘config’ and ‘templates’ in ‘d:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\’. After that I created a file naming test.php in ‘d:\xampp\htdocs’ and ‘test.tpl’ in ‘D:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\templates’. I have replaced the directory names in the test.php file succesfully. But I am confused with my php.ini file. I found some lines there like this bellow:
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; Paths and Directories ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

    ; UNIX: “/path1:/path2”
    include_path = “.:/php/includes”
    ;
    ; Windows: “\path1;\path2″
    ;include_path=”.;D:\xampp\php\pear\”

    there I have included

    include_path = “.;D:\xampp\smarty\libs”

    then I run test.php.

    But it still giving error message like bellow:
    Warning: require(Smarty.class.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in D:\xampp\htdocs\test.php on line 4

    Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘Smarty.class.php’ (include_path=’.;C:\php5\pear’) in D:\xampp\htdocs\test.php on line 4

    How ever My test.php file is given bellow:
    template_dir = ‘D:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’;
    $smarty->config_dir = ‘D:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/config’;
    $smarty->cache_dir = ‘D:/xampp/smarty/cache’;
    $smarty->compile_dir = ‘D:/xampp/smarty/templates_c’;

    $smarty->assign(‘name’,’memohnish!’);
    $smarty->display(‘test.tpl’);

    ?>
    Can you please give me some hints how can I solve this error.

    • Did you restart your apache server after php.ini changes? ppl often forget to do so. Please do so and make sure U have installed the smarty package properly in D:\xampp\smarty and it includes lib folder in it.

    I have forgotten to tell that I have also created ‘template_c’ and ‘cache’ in D:\xampp\smarty.
    However I have written all the steps what I have done to configure smarty in my Xampp.

    • else link the smarty.class.php with a hard-coded link i.e.

      D:/xampp/smarty/libs/Smarty.class.php

        No, parse errors in this example mean YOU left something out of the code or the syntax is off. Why? because I copied and pasted it right from your site. I’ve tried this installation 6 times and it doesn’t effing work.

        so, perhaps you should mention that the quote ‘ symbol in the example is a curly quote and if you copy and paste, it should be replaced with a straight ‘ symbol. that’s what was causing the error “Unexpected T_Class on line 4.” thanks.

        that’s pretty much of a common sense to understand for a programmer.

  2. Just a note. If you’re running MovableType (mt) on an xampp installation and you want to use one of their text-filters such as markdown with PHP files, the code lines above seem to need one more line in php.ini:

    You should add

    include_path = “.;C:\xampp\htdocs\mt\plugins\Markdown\php”

    in PHP.ini, restart Apache, and now you can use the text modifiers inside MT inside htdocs inside Xampp …

  3. Hi,
    I have gone through all the instructions that u have given here. But I am not been able to install the smarty application. My php is giving error bellow:
    Notice: Undefined variable: _SESSION in C:\wamp\smarty\libs\Smarty.class.php on line 585

    Warning: Smarty error: unable to read resource: “index.tpl” in C:\wamp\smarty\libs\Smarty.class.php on line 1110.
    can u suggest me how can i solve this issue

  4. i use ur code but it says parse error at require(’Smarty.class.php’);
    plz give solution as fast as possible

    • Parse error means u left out with some syntax error i.e. missing ) or ;

      can i see ur code plz?

  5. I gone through whole proces but same error occurs as everybody is saying.
    Don’t have any better way to install Smarty? Its quite ticky…
    As we all follow open source concept and still we are facing this type of silly problems. As Microsoft do the things automatically then we also have to provide those facility at least low level also…
    See… we all are facing installation problem in smarty….

    I love heatly PHP but there are some issues which make me little bit confuse…

  6. Dear Monish,
    Your explanation is very very great… I use your code and its working perfectly.

  7. Hi memonish,
    i’ve tried your method for installation
    but it seems error even while i’ve tried out above all methods.
    the error seems to be like this
    Warning: require(smarty.class.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\templates\index.php on line 2

    Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘smarty.class.php’ (include_path=’.;C:\xampp\php\pear\;c:\Smary\libs’) in C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\templates\index.php on line 2

    i can’t understand where i m going wrong so please help me to fix this out

    • This seems to be missing file error or wrong path error. Please check on the code properly for smarty library path.

      Refer some of the above comments.

      Thanks,
      Mohnish

  8. Hello guys,
    Just follow what Safee did. Don’t change anything in php.ini. for some reason, it does not work. Make your index.php as follows:

    template_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’;
    $smarty->config_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/config’;
    $smarty->cache_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/cache’;
    $smarty->compile_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/templates_c’;

    $smarty->assign(‘name’,’memohnish!’);
    $smarty->display(‘index.tpl’);

    ?>

  9. Sorry to post again! Text code is eaten up at the top of the above post!!

    template_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’;
    ……………………
    ……………………

  10. define(‘SMARTY_DIR’,’c:/xampp/smarty/libs/’);

    just add those two lines!!

  15. Heya man, The above explanation was much easier than what we found on Net. the best part is that you are readily helping everybody, even the post is so old.
    I got a bit of problem too.
    I am facing this error when I open Index.php in htdocs,

    “Parse error: parse error in C:\xampp\htdocs\index.php on line 4”

    in Index.php, the above code is copy pasted, so dont think any issues with the code, else everything has been done as said in post.

    What do you think can possibly the reason for this issue.

    Thank You

        The code is absolutely same as mentioned above, It is copy pasted, and is free of syntax errors, but still not able to understand, why this issue is coming.
        If you still want it, I will provide you the code, but it is same as mentioned above.

  16. Thanks for this great tutorial. I cant get it working though. I have been over it several times with no luck.

    I may not be reading right, when you say to put the index.php file in the root, do you mean c:/xampp/htdocs/index.php, or in the smarty folder?

    Either way I get the same error. From what I could figure by the separate posts here is what comes back when I put it into the browser.

    template_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’; $smarty->config_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/config’; $smarty->cache_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/cache’; $smarty->compile_dir = ‘C:/xampp/smarty/templates_c’; $smarty->assign(‘name’,’memohnish!’); $smarty->display(‘index.tpl’); ?> template_dir = ‘C:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/templates’; define(‘SMARTY_DIR’,’c:/xampp/smarty/libs/’); require(SMARTY_DIR.’Smarty.class.php’);

  17. Everyone who has the following parse error and just copy-pasted code for index.php

    Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CLASS in C:\xampp\htdocs\SA\index.php on line 4

    REPLACE this funky quotes ‘’ with straight quotes, this will fix parse error.
    I’ve got another one right after I fixed this one, trying to figure it out

    Warning: Smarty error: unable to read resource: “index.tpl” in C:\xampp\smarty\libs\Smarty.class.php on line 1093

  18. Hello Sir

    After follow teh above step, this error is display

    I did all the settings and it is working very well.

  20. Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<' in D:\xampp\htdocs\files\insert.php on line 14

  21. ..thanks for your nice tutorial. it works well.

    Waste of Time

  31. merci amigo

  32. Hello,

    just remove (`) with (“) in require() function you have succesfully run the code..

    Thanks & Regards,
    jayesh

  33. Hi there, newbie here.

    I have Xampp installed already. Step 2(), did you say create a folder ‘smarty’ outside the root folder: c:\xampp\smarty, and extract the Smarty.x.x.x folder to the same smarty folder: c:\xampp\smarty\Smarty-3.0.6\, is this correct? If so, then I got up to step (3), however, where can I find the php.ini file?

    So sorry, I am very new to Smarty and would like to have this working.

    Thanks 🙂

    • hello Danny,

      First open http://localhost/xampp/phpinfo.php

      see for Configuration File (php.ini) Path option in the phpinfo
      Here you can see the phpinfo path which is mostly C:\xampplite\apache\bin\php.ini in case your xampp is installed in C: drive

      Try for this..

      Thanks,
      Mohnish

      • Ah yes, thank you. I found the apache folder with the php.ini file, it should be easy from here (I hope lol).

  34. I encountered most of the errors described above while installing on Appserv.
    Mohnish’s instructions are mostly correct, it’s just the formatting that’s wrong. I replaced all the “curly quotes” with straight quotes in Notepad++ then changed the double quotes from curly to straight in the include_path statement and it worked.
    Also bear in mind that you may have more than one php.ini file that you’ll need to modify, one in the Appserv/XAMP or whatever directory and maybe another in C:\Windows.
    Perhaps Mohnish could attach Notepad++ files to this post to help others as WordPress doesn’t like it when you try and post scripting language, as evidenced by the syntax errors above….otherwise thanks Mohnish.

  35. Trying to setup smarty on my local WAMP but get the following error, see below.

    I think the php.ini is fine, and I updated the links in smarty_connect.php

    Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

  36. Hi,
    thx for the script. I ‘ve done as you ‘ve told me in yo first post and the index.php run properly.
    However, when i create another smarty template, i receive and error message;

  37. Hi..

    I configure smarty acc to the steps given in the site.

    But at the time to test the index.php it give me following error:.

    Anyone help me to solve this error..

    Thnks

  38. Mohnish:
    THANKS!! Awesome tutorial. I know nothing about XAMPP or Smarty but following your instructions I was able to get your test .tol file running in minutes.

    • sorry… *.tpl file.

  39. Hi,

    I’ve been knocking myself for weeks trying to sort this out – I hope you can help !!

    First – my set-up:

    I am using xampp 1.7.4 and Smarty 1.0.6 and the server root is c:/xampp/htdocs/

    I have the following file set-up:

    xampp/htdocs/smarty/Smarty.class.php

    xampp/temps/smarty/
    templates/
    templates_c/test.tpl
    cache/
    configs/

    I have edited the php.ini file , ‘Paths & Directories’ to read:
    include_path = “.;c:\php\includes”;“.;C:\xampp\smarty”

    I have written a ‘c:/xampp/htdocs/smarty/smarty .php’ file that reads:

    template_dir = “$path/temps/smarty/templates”;
    $smarty->config_dir = “$path/temps/smarty/templates_c”;
    $smarty->cache_dir = “$path/temps/smarty/cache”;
    $smarty->compile_dir = “$path/temps/smarty/configs”;
    $smarty->testInstall();
    //$smarty->utilities->test();

    $smarty->assign(‘name’, ‘Ned’);
    $smarty->display(“$path/temps/smarty/templates/test.tpl”);

    ?>

    I have also written a ‘c:/xammp/htdocs/temps/smarty/templates/test.tpl’ file that reads:

    {* Smarty *}

    Hello {$name}, welcome to Smarty!

    When I run the wretched thing the result I get is:

    Smarty Installation test…
    Testing template directory…
    C:/xampp/htdocs/temps/smarty/templates is OK.
    Testing compile directory…
    C:/xampp/htdocs/temps/smarty/configs is OK.
    Testing plugins directory…
    C:\xampp\htdocs\smarty\plugins\ is OK.
    Testing cache directory…
    C:/xampp/htdocs/temps/smarty/cache is OK.
    Testing configs directory…
    C:/xampp/htdocs/temps/smarty/templates_c is OK.
    Tests complete.

    Where have I gone wrong?

    Please Help,

    Regards,

  40. Mohnish,

    Do you still support this site and if so, when can I expect any assistance?

  45. Hello,

    I downloaded Smarty (version 3.0.8)

    Unpacked the zip fill and saved it to XAMPP/htdoc/smarty.0.8

    Tested the index.php which can be found inside XAMPP/htdoc/smarty.0.8/index.php

    Everything working fine.

    My problem is now how can I reconfigure it for my own use because any changes I make, it gives error. I can’t find any proper explained guideline for beginners.

    Can anyone help?
